LOCALWAVE / SOLO EXHIBITION

РАЙОНWAVE  /  LOCALWAVE
Solo exhibition

LOCALWAVE is my first solo photography exhibition, that took place in A-YA gallery space in St. Petersburg, Russia. This was the opportunity to showcase and collect together photography works made in the period from 2018 to 2022. Focused on the nocturne neighbourhoods and suburbs of Siberia, the show featured a series of large sized prints – "Anytown, Siberia", photo books, NFT and interactive slide projection.

Anytown, Siberia
Photo series, 2018-2022

In the night, the familiar streets don’t look like the gray province, gaining their own romance and calmness, which are harder to find in a large city. This project was started as search for “nocturne americana” aesthetic in the region of Kuzbass in Eastern Siberia: neon signs, silent suburbs, classic cars, something that seemed so attractive and so far away, only seen in the movies and magazines. The English term “Anytown” – town, which doesnt resebmle anything by itself – implies a collective image rather than a documentary reflection of a certain place: it is difficult to say what exactly differs Siberian urban areas from any other region of Russia. Well, we have a lot of Japanese imported cars.

A car is the most basic object to pick out of the environment and build a frame around it, or fullfill a larger composition with a little detail.  Especially if vehicle pictured has got its own history, texture or cultural association. The modern cars are yet to achieve such context, being percieved as visually bland.
